Aussie woman's ‘best kept secret’ to get hair done for free
The Aussie said she received free blowouts every week through the little-known hack.
The cost-of-living crisis means we’re all looking for ways to save and it’s often the personal luxuries like getting your hair done that are the first to get the flick. But one Sydney woman has shared the genius way she is getting the beauty treatment done for free.
Hairdressing apprentices and students will often offer their services - including haircuts, colours and blow outs - at a heavily discounted price while they are training. With a trip to the hair salon often costing upwards of $100, this can provide some serious savings.
Isabella Mahutariki shared she had been getting her hair done for free for the past year after joining a Facebook Group where hairdressers will post looking for training models.

“It is my best kept secret. I’m in a group chat - and they have it in literally every major city in the world - called ‘Hair Models Sydney’,” Mahutariki said on TikTok.
“I get my hair done for free pretty much. I think I’ve paid for my hair twice in the last year and that’s only because I haven’t gone to people in [the group].
“All these people in the group chat give you very heavily discounted hair or [it is] free because it is apprentices or [hairdressers] who need models to do social media content.”
The Sydney woman shared she was getting blowouts every week or fortnight “completely for free” at one stage.
Where can I get a cheap haircut?
There are similar Facebook Groups offering free or discounted hair treatments across the the major Aussies cities:
Another cheap option is getting your hair done by students at your local TAFE. You can get a haircut from just $5 and a full head of foils from $50.
Yahoo Finance recently tried this out and paid $25 for a wash and blow dry. You’ll need to be available Monday to Friday and because your hairdresser will be a student, it can take a bit more time than usual. Overall, though, we found it was a good experience.
You can call your local TAFE to find out exactly what they offer and what classes they currently have running.
