The 10 most expensive homes sold in Australia in 2023
No records were broken but there were still some eye-watering sales.
While there were no records broken in 2023, there's no denying the ferocity of Australia's property market, with homes at the top of the scale often being traded in private deals.
It would have been an impressive feat to top the Australian record $130 million paid for a Point Piper home by Atlassian billionaire Scott Farquhar in December 2022, but there have certainly been some eye-watering sales figures for top-end homes this year.
But will this trend continue next year? With a Tamarama block of land currently on the market for more than $30 million and a Mosman block with an estimated $40 million price tag, you can expect more big sales.
"Any landmark home of a particular size and address and outlook is going to be timeless in terms of property value growth," agent Brad Pillinger of Pillinger told Yahoo Finance. "The number of people with money to spend will be way out of proportion to supply and that's going to override any other economic factors. Simple supply and demand."
So, before the new year arrives, here's a look back at the 10 most expensive Aussie home sales in 2023.
1. Bellevue Hill - about $76 million
Sold in May this year, the Bellevue Property called 'Leura' was designed by architects Walter Liberty Vernon and Howard Joseland in the 1880s in the Federation Queen Anne style.
The mansion has eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a six-car garage and an original ballroom with soaring ceilings and ornate features. Also on the 4,260-sqm block is a tennis court, a huge resort-style pool and spa.
Unbelievably, flower businessman Leo Lynch and his wife Christina paid cash for the property!
2. Point Piper - about $69 million
Although originally built in the 1930s this home was recently renovated before being sold in April 2023.
It has stunning harbour views and the residents have the choice of either the harbourfront pool or a private beach when they want a dip.
3. Bellevue Hill - $61.5 million
Freight boss Arthur Tzaneros bought this newly built home in May this year from Leo Lynch (see No 1) a grand home designed by architect Michael Suttor with Thomas Hamel interiors.
Tzaneros has yet to sell his Vaucluse house, which has been on the market since June at $50-$55 million.
4. Toorak - $61 million
The only Victorian property to make the cut, six-bedroom, seven-bathroom 'Huntingfield' sold in June 2023. It also features two pools, a manicured tennis court and parking for eight cars.
5. Point Piper - around $60 million
Property investor Hoang Trang Do is thought to have paid a high price for 'Akuna' when he bought it in June, given it was sold a year before for $45. Maybe the heritage Chinese-style pagoda boathouse was what sealed the deal.

6. Bellevue Hill - $47.8 million
Fintech entrepreneur Stephen Dash actually got three houses for that price when he bought the compound in May this year.
The main house is the 1982-built Dino-Burattini-designed Breuer estate, which features seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms, parking for five cars, a pool, tennis court and harbour views. He also got the two townhouses in front of it.
7. Tallebudgera - $42 million
The most expensive house ever to be sold in Queensland is this 10-bedroom estate on the Gold Coast which went to auction in February this year.
Known as 'Bellagio La Villa', it sits on 17 hectares and was designed by architect Michael Witty, garden landscaper Paul Bangay and interior designer Eleanor Davis.
8. Bellevue Hill - $39.35 million
Hunter Valley farmers Robert and Camilla Cropper also did well from a designer rebuild, selling their Bellevue Hill property in September for $39.35 million recently after buying it in 2014 for $5.64 million.
They knocked down the old house and did a complete designer rebuild with in-demand Sydney architect Luigi Rosselli.
9. Bellevue Hill - around $35 million
It's becoming a pattern but the much sought-after enclave of Bellevue Hill continues to dominate the most expensive list with Valiant Hire owner Michael Sternberg's house selling for $35 million in May. The 1930s home, which was updated in the 1970s, was sold off-market so not a lot is known about the current state of the home.
10. Double Bay - $35 million
The six-bedroom house on 552 square metres was originally on the market for $45 million but is believed to have been sold for about $10 million less this month.
