You’ve heard of Boxing Day and Black Friday, End of Financial Year sales and even Click Frenzy – but have you heard of Singles’ Day?

The global shopping festival, which is taking place today (11 November), originated in China and is known as Singles’ Day because 11/11 resembles four ‘single sticks’ – a term used to refer to bachelors.

Bachelors’ Day began back in 1993 in Nanjing University in Jiangsu province, but it wasn’t until 2009 that Alibaba turned the day into a huge fashion event on its TaoBao site.

Fashion retailers across the globe have since joined in to participate, and it’s even smashed Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales in the United States.

In fact, in the first hour of its sale today, Alibaba hit 91.2 billion yuan (AU$19 billion), which is up 32 per cent from last year’s first hour haul of 69 billion yuan.

If you want to get in on the action, take a look at 10 of the best Singles’ Day deals:

  • David Jones: 10% off a range of full-priced women’s designer fashion, shoes and accessories, and 20% off range of full-priced men's designer fashion, shoes and accessories;

  • Lorna Jane: 20% off full price;

  • AliExpress: Up to 70% off;

  • Boohoo: 50% off everything;

  • BoohooMAN: 40% off everything + extra 11% off;

  • Alice McCall: 30% off current season and sale;

  • YSL Beauty: $300 and save $50;

  • Myer: 25% off select women’s shoes + 20% off select women’s clothing;

Singles’ Day is a one-day event, so you’ll have until midnight to make your purchase. But, if you don’t make the sales today, Click Frenzy begins tomorrow.
