You know the feeling when you find a $20 note in a forgotten purse?

Well, 66,000 Australians would have been thrilled to find an extra $860 million in their pockets between October and December last year after locating their lost and unclaimed super.

That’s an average $13,000 each.

“Tidying up seems to be a hot topic at the moment, so before you spend too much time re-organising your sock drawer and kitchen cupboards this summer, take a few minutes to tidy up your superannuation,” the Australian Tax Office assistant commissioner Graham Whyte said.

Referencing the hit Netflix show about cleaning up, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, White said: “Seeing the extra money in your consolidated superannuation will definitely spark joy.”

While people in New South Wales are leading the way when it comes to consolidating their super, there’s still a staggering $17.5 billion in lost and unclaimed super across the country.

Unconsolidated super a major problem

The Productivity Commission has condemned the proliferation of duplicate accounts in the $2.6 trillion superannuation sector.

Australians with multiple accounts pay duplicate fees and for duplicate insurance, it warned.

The Commission wants new workforce entrants to choose a default fund just once upon entering the workforce to avoid having multiple employers assign employees multiple super funds and accounts.
