Mavericks' Luka Doncic intends to play Wednesday before All-Star break: 'I'm ready'

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic intends to return to the court Wednesday night following a seven-game absence due to a sprained ankle.

The Mavericks are hosting the Sacramento Kings before the All-Star break this weekend.

"I'm ready," Doncic told reporters after Tuesday’s practice, via ESPN. "I'm just excited to be back out there and play basketball."

Head coach Rick Carlisle said that Doncic’s status will be upgraded. The second-year star played 5-on-5 at the practice facility on Monday, his first game-type action since spraining the ankle Jan. 30. It was expected he’d return for Wednesday’s game.

Doncic, 20, averages 28.8 points, 9.5 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game. It was his second sprain of the right ankle this season. He first injured it Dec. 14 and said the latest was “a little bit worse, but not much different,” per ESPN. The team is 27-16 with him on the court this season.

Doncic said he intends to play in the All-Star game and Rising Stars game in Chicago, per Eddie Sefko of Mavs.com.

LeBron James picked Doncic for his team in last week’s selection with fellow All-Star captain Giannis Antetokounmpo. He’s a starter alongside James, Kawhi Leonard and James Harden.
