IGA drops prices on more than 3,000 grocery staples

The price of 1,200 products will be automatically dropped to match the lowest prices at Coles and Woolworths.

IGA has slashed the prices of thousands of popular supermarket products for the next three months, as customers struggle with the rising cost of living.

The major supermarket chain dropped the prices on more than 3,000 products as part of its Low Prices Every Day initiative.

Prices will be locked across the country until August 29, 2023. It is the largest price drop the Aussie chain has ever introduced.

IGA said customers could feel confident they would get the same low price on the selected items each time they completed their shop.

Prices to match Coles and Woolworths

On top of the price drops, IGA said customers could benefit from the Price Match program which ensured they wouldn’t pay more than those shopping at other major supermarkets.

Prices on up to 1,200 in-store items will automatically be matched to the lowest regular shelf price of Coles and Woolworths.

Coles and Woolworths price drops

The other major supermarket chains introduced price drops last year and have continued them to varying extents this year.

In April this year, Coles announced it was locking in lower prices for more than 370 grocery items, and locking in the discounts for three months.

Similarly, in May this year, Woolworths announced it was dropping prices on more than 450 winter essentials in store and online, including chicken, corned beef, soup, pasta and oats.

Grocery prices soar

Finder money expert Sarah Megginson said Aussies were struggling as a result of the cost-of-living crisis.

“So many people are scraping the bottom of the barrel right now. It’s really distressing to be in a position where you can’t afford your groceries or fuel,” Megginson said.

“Australians are being left embarrassed at the checkout as increases to household bills means there’s just not much money left in the bank.”

Grocery-bill stress hit a record high in August, with 37 per cent of Australians ranking groceries as one of their top three most stressful expenses.
