How to land your next job using AI

Nearly half of Aussie job seekers are using artificial intelligence to find and apply for jobs.

There’s been a lot of chatter around how artificial intelligence (AI) might take over our jobs. But AI tools may also hold the key to finding a new job.

Recent research by Indeed found nearly half (46 per cent) of Aussies were using AI tools to find and apply for a new job, including to help them craft and optimise their CVs and cover letters. And it appears to be working.

Roughly half (52 per cent) said AI tools, including the likes of ChatGPT and Bard, had brought them more success in their job search, while 74 per cent who received a job offer said they got it faster.

Franko Ali, from early-stage venture-capital firm Investible, was recently hiring and actually assessed candidates with the expectation they would use AI as part of their application.

“We’re a venture-capital firm so, just by our nature and the type of business that we do, it’s important for people in any role in our company to be familiar with cutting-edge tools and to think about how they could be applied in new and interesting ways,” Ali told Yahoo Finance.

“At the final stage [of the hiring process], I was really looking out for people that were likely to use ChatGPT or some other sort of generative AI to pull together a case study.”

Ali even used ChatGPT to reverse engineer some of the candidate’s responses, asking the tool how likely it was that candidates had used it themselves.

The key for a successful applicant, though, was going above AI and making the application their own.

“AI can only get you so far. It can get you through the door, but if you’re not able to communicate [your work] then it probably won’t get you the job,” Ali said.

“A good candidate is someone who uses [AI] as a supplement to their own creativity and problem solving.”

How to use AI in your job hunt

Indeed career coach Sally McKibbin said Aussie job seekers were using AI to match themselves with suitable roles, craft CVs and cover letters, practise responses to interview questions and even help with salary negotiations.

“AI is the way of the future. The fact that job seekers are actually trying to use these AI tools shows they are aligning themselves with technologies of the future. So, I think it shows quite a lot of initiative if it’s used correctly,” McKibbin told Yahoo Finance.

Like Ali, McKibbin thought AI could be a great starting point for job hunters, but she encouraged people to go beyond it and ensure their application actually reflected their personality.

“I think my biggest takeaway is to create a level of authenticity in what you're presenting to that business and the job you are applying for,” McKibbin said.

“Make sure that what you are representing sounds like you and how you would present yourself … really make sure that you are tailoring it to how you would want to be perceived.”
