US President Donald Trump made headlines yesterday with revelations that he had consulted with aides on the possibility of acquiring Greenland.

And while amused, Greenlanders have responded in an emphatic fashion, telling Trump the country is not for sale.

“We see it as an expression of greater interest in investing in our country and the possibilities we offer," the Greenland government said on Friday.

"Of course, Greenland is not for sale."

And on Twitter, the Greenland Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country is rich in resources including minerals, fish, renewable energy and ice.

Additionally, the autonomous Danish territory - which shares territory with the Arctic circle is a “new frontier for adventure tourism”.

“We're open for business, not for sale.”

Former Danish Prime Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen joked on Twitter that it “must be an April Fool’s Day Joke… but totally out of season!”

“No thanks to Trump buying Greenland!" added member of Parliament, Aaja Chemnitz Larsen.

“On the contrary, a better and more equal partnership with Denmark should be the way forward for a stronger and longer term free Greenland,” she added.

However, while Greenlanders laugh it off, this isn’t the first time the US has expressed interest in buying Greenland.

The US suggested paying Denmark US$100 million to buy the region in 1946 while considering exchanging parts of Alaska for regions of Greenland.
