Coles shopper reveals how you can slash grocery bill using clever hack: 'Ridiculous'

The Sydney shopper was able to score some “bargains” on her supermarket shop.

An Aussie nutritionist has revealed the easy way she scored a range of grocery items for a heavily discounted price at Coles.

Sydney woman Abbey McPherson decided to test out a popular supermarket savings hack and was pleasantly surprised by what she found.

“If you go into Coles or Woolies within the last hour, half an hour of them being open, apparently they have ridiculous sales,” McPherson said in a video posted online. “If this is real I’ll be pretty impressed.”

She then filmed herself visiting her local Coles before closing time and revealed the “banging bargains” she was able to find.

“I found a reduced salad kit to $3.02, some extra mixed lettuce and another salad kit for 75 cents and 60 cents each,” McPherson shared.

Other items she purchased included a roast chicken for $6, half price from $12, celery sticks for 70 cents each, down from $4.70, pita bread for 72 cents, down from $3.60, and skim milk for 90 cents, down from $4.50.

Her grocery haul came to a total of $21.14 - which worked out to less than half what she would have paid for the items at full price.

McPherson said the “real challenge” was not getting overwhelmed by the markdowns on offer.

“The last thing we want to do is actually waste more money,” McPherson said.

“But, in saying this, you can always buy meats and breads and freeze them. And even milk too - which I got for 90 cents, by the way.”

When can you get reduced items?

There’s no specific time you can get marked-down items at Coles or Woolworths. It instead depends on factors like the individual store and stock levels.

A Coles spokesperson previously told Yahoo it often marked down products nearing their best-before date so they could still be enjoyed, rather than wasted. When the markdowns happen will depend on factors like stock on hand, delivery schedules and team member rostering.

Meanwhile, a Woolworths spokesperson said its markdowns varied from day to day and store to store, based on stock levels and demand.

If you’re looking for other bargains at Coles, the supermarket also has a policy where it will give you a voucher for a free hot roast chicken if you go to the store and there are none in stock.
