Coles and Uber Eats expanding fast delivery service - here's when it's coming to you

If all goes to plan, the move will make Coles the largest player in the on-demand grocery niche.

Just days on from the spectacular demise of on-demand delivery service Milkrun, it appears Coles and Uber are swooping in to dominate the niche.

The new, expanded partnership is set to make Coles the largest national on-demand grocery delivery service within the Uber Eats app, with thousands of supermarket items available to order.

Although Coles and Uber have already been working together for some time, Uber Eats customers could previously only order from Coles in select locations and the product selection was quite limited.

The new, expanded partnership will be rolling out Australia-wide and will enable customers to order everything from last-minute ingredients to the ever-popular barbeque hot roast chickens.

Coles general manager of digital operations and venture Claire Pallot said the expanded partnership will deliver fast, reliable and affordable grocery delivery service to Aussies on the go.

"We're delighted to expand our partnership with Uber Eats to offer Australians a fast, reliable, and affordable option for getting fresh produce and groceries delivered to their doorsteps," Pallot said.

"Customers can continue to enjoy great value and quality produce they find at Coles, but with the convenience of on-demand delivery through Uber Eats."

First locations revealed

The new service will be rolling out to more than 500 Coles supermarkets across the country in the coming months, starting today with the following Melbourne stores:

Customers will be able to choose from a wide selection of groceries, including fresh produce, meat, dairy, and pantry staples; and will also be able to track their orders in real time.

Uber One members will also enjoy $0 delivery fees on all eligible orders. In the coming months, Uber will also support Coles and Liquorland with last-mile delivery for their online customers, with customers able to choose two-hour delivery by Uber at checkout.

Welcome new feature

Deliveries placed with Coles through Uber Eats will be packed and delivered by a delivery person using the Uber Eats platform.

In an interesting twist that's likely to be attractive to consumers, the "Pack and Deliver" service will allow delivery team members to communicate with customers directly in-app, so any out-of-stock items can be swapped for products of their choice. Product substitutions have long been a major pain-point with Coles and Woolworths' in-house delivery services.

Rival on-demand grocery service Milkrun turned heads after raising more than $86 million in 2022, but were forced to wind down earlier this week after they failed to secure further funding for their cash-burning operation. Some 400 staff including delivery drivers were made redundant.
