Best Woolworths, Coles 50%-off deals this week

Coles and Woolworths take 50 per cent off the prices of select groceries each week.

These bargains, called "loss leaders" in the retail industry, are not there to make money for the supermarkets. They are designed to bring people in, who will likely end up adding more profitable full-price items into their trolley.

Woolworths and Coles also use the half-price specials to distinguish themselves from emerging rival Aldi. The German challenger has its own weekly sale products, but they're never as heavily slashed as 50 per cent.

For your convenience, Yahoo Finance has selected the best half-price products from both supermarkets. You can compare them in one place to help you pick which retailer to shop at this week.
