Aussie parents know how costly feeding a family can be, but this Aussie mum is sharing her secret to keeping the grocery bill under $100.

In a now-viral TikTok, user Frugal Fun Mum shares what meals she makes to feed her family for less than $100 a week.

In a series of videos she demonstrated how she used a $100 Aldi gift card for the weekly shop, and what recipes she created.

Users were quick to show their surprise that she managed to feed an entire family for that little.

“$100 for a family of 4 for a week? I’m spending $100 every couple of days for a family of 5!” one user said.

“Finally a creator who knows how to shop economically,” another said.

The mum shares that her meals are on the more basic side because she has children with autism who have different sensory needs.

In the end, she walks away from Aldi having only spent $98.57 and goes on to show what she cooked.

“I love frozen veggies. They’re quick and convenient. I spend a lot of time dividing them up according to everyone’s sensory and texture needs,” the frugal mum said.

From her haul, she was able to make chicken and rice with a honey-mustard sauce, roast beef and vegetables, beef stew with vegetables, chicken nuggets with mash potatoes and vegetables, beef rissoles with vegetables, triangles and nuggets with vegetables, another chicken and rice dish, savoury beef and rice, lasagne with homemade chips, chicken pizza and an apple crumble for dessert.

“I have leftovers to reheat so we never do takeaway and I also have leftovers for more meals,” the frugal mum said.

Grocery prices soar

According to Finder’s Consumer Sentiment Tracker, Aussies are more concerned than ever before about the cost of food.

While only around 20 per cent of households nominated groceries as a cause of financial stress a few years ago, that figure has risen steadily through the years.

By March 2023, it had increased to 43 per cent, nudging ahead of the 42 per cent of Australians who cited housing costs as their most stressful expense.

The average Australian household now spends $185 a week on groceries, according to Finder, up $37 a week compared to 12 months prior. This is a total cost increase of $1,924 per year.
