Why aren’t Aussies applying?
For example, Adelaide seen a recent surge of demand for boilermakers and welders thanks to more structural steel work, but companies have been forced to go looking overseas to fill the vacancies.
Younger Australians these days are less attracted to the trades and more attracted to desk-based or digital jobs, said Southern Cross Workforce director Mike Racher.
“A lot of the younger guys and girls aren't wanting to get their hands dirty because they're going into high tech careers or sitting at a desk,” Maxima business development consultant Rod McInnes told Adelaide Now.
