Remember the mankini?

Popularised by Sacha-Baron Cohen’s comic creation, Borat, the ‘mankini’s’ Christmas-themed cousin could be the worst gift sitting under your Christmas tree.

“While there’s nothing wrong with a little novelty at Christmas, unwrapping a Santakini might not leave everyone’s bells jingling,” Mozo director Kirsty Lamont said while unveiling 2018’s “crappiest Christmas presents”.

The Santakini, or a Christmas-themed mankini has slid into first place with a price tag of $24.95.

What else made the cut?

Mozo searched Christmas catalogues to come up with this list of items that are either useless, a waste of money or just too silly.

I like the Santakini, am I alone in this?

Not necessarily.

Mozo also surveyed Australians and found only 30 per cent of millennials consider the Santakini a crappy present. That’s compared to more than half of Australians over 35.

“Interestingly we saw the reverse with the shower beer holder which was rejected by six in 10 under 25s, while the over 55s were more inclined to quench their thirst while having a wash,” Lamont said.

Aussies over 55 thought the shower beer holder was more fun than those younger than 25.

The ultimate fashion faux-pas, socks with sandals are also apparently popular in the ACT and the Northern Territory, where no one considered the sandal socks the silliest gift.

“Perhaps unsurprisingly, only around 10% of millennials thought the wake and bake grill (albeit a prank present box) was a silly gift, compared to 4 in ten over 35s,” Lamont continued.

Let’s get serious

While they can be a bit of harmless fun, overspending on joke gifts can cause financial pain.

Aussies are set to spend $29.5 billion on their credit cards this month, bringing national credit card debt to $31.9 billion, Mozo forecasts.

“While a little novelty can lighten the mood during the festive season, overspending on pointless presents can be a real drain on the family finances,” Lamont said, urging shoppers to consider their purchases.
