Hospitality and retail were two of the sectors hit hardest by the Covid-19 pandemic, but now they’re leading the charge for employment demand, new Gumtree analysis has revealed.

The marketplace found that as restaurants and cafes reopen, employers are looking to snap up workers, while Australians are also seeking out tradies as lockdown restrictions see home improvements surge in popularity.

It comes as desperate employers look for new ways to find staff: Australian Venue Co., which has 150 venues, is offering a $1,000 sign-on bonus for prospective employees.

However, at the same time, demand for office administration and commercial cleaning has fallen over the October-November period.

Similarly, there’s decreased demand for childcare and nanny services.

How can I stand out?

Gumtree Jobs national sales manager Annabelle Hodgetts said the first step is to have a solid understanding of the types of jobs you’re looking for by using specific keywords.

“Put yourself in the shoes of the employer and consider what keywords might appear in their job ad – then, use these as search terms,” she said.

The next step is to do your research. That means finding out more about the employer, the role and whether they’re legitimate.

She suggested checking the validity of an employer by visiting ABN Lookup.

“Ensure you don’t provide any bank or identification details when applying for a job - this should only be shared once you’ve accepted an offer of employment,” Hodgetts said.

“Avoid ‘work from home’ jobs which aren’t posted by well-known organisations, and listings which guarantee wealth or financial success within a short period of time – these forms of job listings are often not legitimate. For more information on our jobs policies, visit our Help page here.”

Keep it specific

Hodgetts said a critical rule is to make sure you’re not using the same application for every role.

There are around 1 million Australians who are unemployed at the moment, so it’s important that your application is tailored to the role to give yourself an edge on the competition.

“When it comes to formatting your application, follow the structure of a typical resume with the most relevant experience or qualifications listed at the top,” she said.

“If the role asks for any specific requirements, such as a Working with Children Check or forklift license, call these out in your application and provide evidence – this might fast track your application.

“Tailor your application for each job ad to highlight your suitability for each role – for instance, are they looking for someone “local” and you fit the bill? Great, highlight that!”

Follow up

And the last step is to make sure you’ve given a potential employer a way to get in touch.

“Whether you’re formally applying or just submitting an enquiry, ensure you’ve included your full name and accurate contact details, preferably both phone and email.”
