A pandemic-driven boom in home appliance sales will last longer than previously anticipated and extend into the second half of the year, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's head of the business said. Lee Jae-seung, president of the South Korean company's digital appliances business, told Reuters in an interview that he had originally expected the boom to subside after the first quarter of this year. A buoyant demand outlook from one of the prominent global home appliances makers brings supply-chain issues to the fore, specifically a shortage of semiconductors that has hurt many industries, particularly the automobile sector.

(Bloomberg) -- Ginkgo Bioworks Inc., which calls itself an “organism design” company, has agreed to go public in a $17.5 billion merger with a blank-check firm backed by former Hollywood executive Harry Sloan. The Boston-based company, which uses technology to program cells for a potentially wide variety of uses, will combine with Soaring Eagle Acquisition Corp., according to a regulatory statement Tuesday that confirmed an earlier Bloomberg News report. The transaction includes a $775 million private placement led by Baillie Gifford, Putnam Investments and Morgan Stanley Investment Management’s Counterpoint Global arm. Cathie Wood’s Ark Investment Management LLC, Bain Capital’s public equity arm, Bill Gates’s Cascade Investment LLC and T. Rowe Price Associates Inc. are also participating in the fundraising, the statement shows. The deal values Ginkgo at $15 billion, before adding the proceeds raised by the special purpose acquisition company and other investors, according to the statement. The SPAC raised $1.73 billion including so-called greenshoe shares in an initial public offering in February.Soaring Eagle fell 1.3% to $10.18 at 9:33 a.m. in New York Tuesday, giving the company a market value of about $2.1 billion.Programmable BiologyThe underlying principle of Ginkgo’s business is that biology is programmable in a way analogous to computers -- just using the four basic chemical building blocks of DNA sequencing instead of zeros and ones. The company can design mammal, bacteria and yeast cells to serve specific purposes.“The magic of biology is that cells run on digital code similar to a computer, except that instead of 0s and 1s it’s As, Ts, Cs, and Gs,” Jason Kelly, co-founder and chief executive officer of Ginkgo, said in a statement. “Ginkgo’s platform makes it easier to program this code, and we are making this platform available to organizations working to solve our most pressing problems.During the past year, Ginkgo repurposed its technology to read and modify living cells to help address the shortfall of diagnostic testing.Arie Belldegrun, who started Kite Pharma Inc. and Allogene Therapeutics Inc., is co-sponsoring the merger with Soaring Eagle and had bought equity in the SPAC and participated in the private placement. Belldegrun and Sloan, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s former chairman, will join Ginkgo’s board as part of the agreement.“We live in an era of evolution in biology and in life science,” Belldegrun, who was trained as an oncologist, said in an interview. “I believe that the greatest future opportunity of synthetic biology is in the area of biotech -- drug development and drug manufacturing.”Ginkgo was founded by a group of Massachusetts Institute of Technology graduate students and then-professor Tom Knight. Led by Kelly, its investors have included funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price, Viking Global Investors and General Atlantic.“If you find a company like Ginkgo, which we call a category of one -- meaning it’s not only the leader in the field but it created the field itself -- those companies make great sense as a SPAC,” Sloan said in an interview.(Updates trading in fifth paragraph; adds CEO comment in seventh paragraph)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2021 Bloomberg L.P.

UNREAD MESSAGES ARTWORK_JPGs_UM_SINCH TRANS KV 9_16 Unread Messages harnesses power of conversations In Partnership with Journalist and Advocate Gretchen Carlson and Powered by Sinch technology, the New Docu-Series Reveals How Hard, Uncomfortable Conversations Are Effective Tools in the Fight for Unity ATLANTA, GEORGIA, MAY 11, 2021 – As President Biden concluded his first 100 days in office with an address to the nation his call for Americans to come together as one nation was louder than ever. To help bring people together on some of the most divisive topics today, Sinch (XSTO:SINCH) has teamed up with journalist and advocate Gretchen Carlson to showcase the world’s first chat documentary, Unread Messages. The docu-series, which is available today at unreadmessages.org, reveals how people across the U.S. are using technology to create a grassroots effort of unity in America. America is facing unprecedented division confronting a trifecta of issues: politics, protests, and the pandemic. Although there is great division within the country, people are more connected than ever before. Mobility and social media have become effective platforms to share ideas and connect people, particularly during the pandemic, but it has also been the birthplace of much of the division sewn in the country. “During this unprecedented time of isolation, our phones have allowed us to stay connected, but because of the challenges the world is facing – race, health, sexuality, politics – some of our relationships have been bruised with opposing views,” said Jonathan Bean, Chief Marketing Officer at Sinch. “Too often we’re only presented with how technology is dividing us and rarely do we see how it effectively unites us. Every story has two sides and is why Unread Messages is so powerful. The chat documentary reveals, through real messages, the highs and lows of finding common ground. Just like in real life, some of the stories have happy endings, while others continue to be works in progress. Unread Messages shows the important role conversations have in healing the divide.” “When Sinch approached me with the opportunity to tell stories of how real Americans are using technology to bridge the divide, I was intrigued,” noted award winning journalist and empowerment advocate Gretchen Carlson. “Bringing people together to help tell their own stories, has been one of the cornerstones of my life, especially after telling such a personal story of my own. The project is a unique way to step inside someone else’s shoes by sharing real and intimate conversations through personal messages. Unread Messages allows for greater empathy to shine through no matter what side of the conversation you’re on.” Unread Messages is powered by Sinch’s Chatlayer technology and while each story uploads, the user is able to be part of the conversation through Natural Language Processing (NLP) before unleashing the real-life conversations. The interactive experience allows for each participant to feel more intimately connected to the story. The result is a greater sense of understanding and empathy towards each person’s point of view. To help more people use the power of conversation to reunite the country, Sinch has partnered with Living Room Conversations to build discussion guides which can help open the hardest and most uncomfortable conversations today, including: race, religion, sexuality, medicine and politics. These conversation guides provide people with the tools necessary to build trust, share personal experiences and find common ground so that we can cross the bridge toward unity. “We’re proud to be part of the Unread Messages conversation,” said Living Room Conversations co-founder Joan Blades. “We understand the power of conversations and many of the challenges. We’ve developed conversation guides which can help anyone willing to be curious and follow some basic conversation agreements. Respectful conversations increase understanding and connection and improve conversation skills in meaningful ways." To learn more, please go to unreadmessages.org to experience each story and to download the tools needed to have your own conversations and join the grassroots effort to reunite America. # # # CONTACT:Jeff HasenDirector of Content and Communications at Sinchjeff.email@example.com ABOUT UNREAD MESSAGES:Unread Messages is a first of its kind four-part chat docu-series, journalist and advocate Gretchen Carlson joins as a philanthropic partner and powered by SINCH technology, to uncover the hard and uncomfortable conversations American families are having every day through text messaging and show how conversations can help reunite America. New Thermo-To-Go™ containers reduce waste while keeping food hotter and more secure New Thermo-To-Go Packaging El Pollo Loco’s famous fire-grilled chicken stays hotter for a fresh-from-the-grill taste in every bite. Preserves heat and quality Tostada Salad stays hotter for pickup, drive-thru and delivery. Showcases hand-cut ingredients Delicious ingredients can be viewed with eco-friendly clear lid COSTA MESA, Calif., May 11, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- El Pollo Loco, Inc. (“El Pollo Loco” or “Company) (Nasdaq: LOCO), the nation’s leading fire-grilled chicken restaurant chain, is eliminating its use of Styrofoam and continuing its improvements to customers’ off-premises dining experience with a system-wide rollout of clear, eco-conscious Thermo-To-Go packaging that keeps food hotter for a fresh-from-the-grill taste in every bite. “El Pollo Loco is committed to enhancing the convenience and overall experience of off-premises dining, which continues to grow exponentially and currently comprises the bulk of our business,” El Pollo Loco President and Chief Executive Officer Bernard Acoca said. “Not only is our new Thermo-To-Go packaging better for the environment, but it’s also sturdier and has an appealing aesthetic that showcases our delicious food while preserving heat and quality.” The transition to the Thermo-To-Go containers, which are made from partially recycled materials, will remove 1.9 million cubic feet of Styrofoam — the equivalent of 21 Olympic-size swimming pools — from the national waste stream annually. El Pollo Loco’s off-premises business has burgeoned since 2019, with delivery sales jumping by 250% and its already robust drive-thru business growing by 43%. In the last year, El Pollo Loco has introduced GPS-enabled curbside pickup, drive-thru enhancements and other improvements to its off-premises offerings as part of its ongoing digital transformation strategy; however, the pandemic-induced growth in off-premises business served as further incentive to accelerate the rollout of additional upgrades, including the move to better packaging. The new Thermo-To-Go packaging is a continuation of El Pollo Loco’s commitment to being an industry leader in safe and reliable off-premises dining, which it kicked off with its switch to tamper-free, sealable delivery bags at the start of the pandemic. It also aligns with El Pollo Loco’s recent adoption of a modern, design-forward approach that complements its high-quality food and offers customers an exceptional and enjoyable experience at every touchpoint. El Pollo Loco’s Tostadas switched to Thermo-To-Go packaging in late April and the restaurant’s famous Fire-grilled Chicken will be sold in the new containers system-wide by the end of May. About El Pollo Loco El Pollo Loco (Nasdaq:LOCO) is the nation’s leading fire-grilled chicken restaurant with a mission to bring people together around food, family, and culture in the communities it serves.
