Before the S, before the X, before the 3, there was the Roadster.
Tesla’s (TSLA) Roadster sports car was produced from 2008 to 2012 and was the first production all-electric car to travel more than 200 miles per charge.
Now one of these first-ever Teslas—a 2008 Roadster—is for sale on eBay (EBAY) for $1 million.
Though originally used as a concept car, the seller purchased the Roadster in Denver, Colorado, and registered it in Alameda, California.
The seller—jester944—describes it as an “ultra rare Tesla roadster validation prototype.” Jester944 (who has 100% positive feedback), says it’s unique not only because of early features like a gear shift knob that’s not found on most other models, but also because it’s one of about 33 Roadster prototypes; many of the others were destroyed in crash testing.
This car has logged about 18,000 miles and it is road ready. The seller assumes all responsibility for the listing, and the full vehicle history report is available online.
This isn’t the first Tesla to be up for grabs on eBay. In April of this year, a Tesla Model S No. 9 (a Signature edition set) that was personally inspected by Tesla CEO Elon Musk received a total of 50 bids and sold for $53,300.
(Other luxury toys featured on the site: a Boeing 747 jumbo jet that was listed this summer. And, in 2006, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich purchased a Frank Mulder–designed Gigayacht for $168 million.)
Before you get your heart set on the vintage Tesla, keep in mind that a “different, faster and bigger” Roadster is in the works and is expected by 2019. But if you can’t wait until then, start bidding. You have 0 competition! For now.
