ASX to lift as Australia marks International Women's Day

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - FEBRUARY 11: Pedestrians wearing masks walk past the Pullman Hotel on February 11, 2021 in Melbourne, Australia. Victorians have been warned to remain on alert for coronavirus symptoms following new COVID-19 cases detected in the community linked to the Holiday Inn quarantine hotel. Monday 8 March marks International Women’s Day. Follow Yahoo Finance as we explore how 2020 impacted Australian women.

Good morning.

Here's your Yahoo Finance Monday morning wrap:

ASX: The Australian share market looks set to lift at the open after Wall Street finished up a choppy week of trading in the green, amid better-than-expected labour data that both signalled the economic recovery but also stoked concerns about economic overheating.

Wall Street: The S&P 500 ended up 1.95 per cent to 3,841.78; the Dow was up by 573.80 points or 1.86 per cent to 31,497.88; and the Nasdaq Nasdaq was up by 196.68 points or 1.55 per cent to 12,920.15. Yahoo Finance US stocks reporter Emily McCormick has more for you here.

It's International Women's Day. You can trust that Yahoo Finance will be bringing you IWD-related stories to you throughout today, but for now, we need to talk about the gender pay gap. It's a big issue, because it also becomes the gender super gap, and the gender property gap.

It's also triggered leading economists to call on the Federal Government to overhaul policies that are more beneficial for men than for women. In fact, the employment recovery is disadvantaging women, says Australia Institute Centre for Future Work's senior economist Alison Pennington.

The tourism sector is in talks with federal ministers to secure funding after JobKeeper ends. The Tourism & Transport Forum CEO Margy Osmond has met with the Treasurer and Tourism Minister in recent weeks and says she's "confident that our concerns and potential support options are being closely considered at this critical juncture".
