Would you accept a ‘marriage KPI’ from your boss?

Eccentric Alibaba leader, Jack Ma has issued an interesting dictum this week: staff should attempt to meet “marriage KPIs”.

Speaking at an Alibaba company wedding where more than 100 couples were married, Ma said workers should follow the “669” principle, the ABC has reported.

“We want 669 in life. What is 669? Six times in six days, the emphasis is on nine.”

Confused? Ma was talking about sex, suggesting workers make a habit of engaging in it six times a week, with “9” referring to length, as nine is a homophone for “long” in Mandarin.

“The first KPI of marriage is to have results. There must be products. What is the product? Have children,” Ma said.

“Marriage is not for the purpose of accumulating wealth, not for buying a house, not for buying a car, but for having a child together.”

His comments triggered backlash on social media, with some questioning whether Ma thought his staff were robots.

Others thought the words were surprising.

Another Weibo user asked how realistic 669 was when Ma was also promoting “996”.

What’s “996”?

Just last month Ma touted the “996” work ethic, which encourages working from 9am to 9pm, six days a week.

He’s also described working a 72-hour week as a “huge blessing”.

“Many companies and many people don’t have the opportunity to work 996. If you don’t work 996 when you are young, when can you ever work 996?”
