Yahoo Finance's morning wrap for Thursday

Here’s everything you need to know in finance this morning.

The ASX is expected to open lower following a mixed bag from Wall Street overnight. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down 0.04 per cent, while the S&P 500 was down 0.12 per cent. The Nasdaq Composite bucked the trend, up 0.32 per cent.

The Aussie dollar is currently buying 69.86 US cents, up from 69.75 US cents on Wednesday.

Wall Street was in a state of flux as US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping moved closer to a meeting on the countries’ tariffs.

"(Trade) optimism has been unwound as the day has gone on," said Robert Pavlik, chief investment strategist at SlateStone Wealth in New York. "Last week the market had a clear path of what to focus on: A rate cut in July and Trump and Xi meeting at the G20 to discuss reopening trade negotiations," Pavlik added. "What has happened since is this government has muddied the waters and confused the market."

Workplace reform could be in store for casual workers as Industrial Relations Minister Christian Porter mulls whether casual employment needs to be redefined and unfair dismissal laws changed.

He said unfair dismissal laws are “ripe for improvement”.

Boeing has run into more problems, with the US Federal Aviation Administration identifying a new risk in the company’s 737 MAX aircraft. The problem will need to be fixed before the troubled airliner can return to the skies.
