Woolworths shopper reveals hidden reason you should buy your meat from a butcher

Matt bought the same type of meat from both and said there is a big difference between the two.

A Woolworths shopper has revealed why it is better buying your meat from a local butcher instead of from the big supermarkets. The cost of living crisis has left many shoppers trying to save as much money as possible at the checkout and meat can certainly drive up the receipt depending on what and where you buy.

Matt West wanted to test a theory that butchers not only have cheaper meat but they are also better quality. So, he headed to his local Woolies and picked up a 500 gram packet of premium grass-fed beef mince, and did the same at a nearby butcher.

He found the packet from Woolworths cost him $11, while butcher's meat was only $8.50.

"That in my opinion makes it worth it," he said in a video. "But I wanted to test the quality between supermarket and butcher and when I cooked up the supermarket one I was really surprised at how much water came out of the mince."

He weighed the cooked meat from Woolworths and it came to 371 grams.

"It was then time to cook up the butcher's mince and the big thing I noticed was way less water," West said.

"I couldn't believe the difference in between the two. They were both premium mince, both grass-fed, so technically on the same playing field."

West then chucked the butcher's mince onto the scales and it came in at an impressive 417 grams, which is 46 grams more than the packet from Woolworths.

"In my opinion get down to the butcher, you're gonna save money, get more bang for your buck and you can support a local business," he said.

People couldn't believe the savings and quality difference between the two.

"I really thought the butcher was for rich people, so I will defs try this myself," wrote one viewer.

"I save so much money at the butcher, buy bulk packs and split it up," said another.

A butcher also replied to West's video saying they wish "more people knew this".

More than 250 butcher sections were shut down from Woolworths supermarkets around the country last year after the company noticed customers preferred to buy the pre-packaged meat.

The move saw nearly 500 people made redundant and it followed the same decision taken by Coles in 2021.

"We've recently conducted a review into our instore butcher shops and found that they account for just 4 per cent of meat sales as customers continue to move towards our more convenient pre-packaged options," a statement from Woolworths said at the time.

"We've made the difficult decision to close the majority of our remaining butcher counters over the coming months, with the exception of 50 stores where they are supported by the necessary customer demand.

"We deeply regret the impact of this decision on the team members who work in our butcher shops and we know many of them are well known by our regular customers.

"Across all stores, we'll continue to offer our customers high-quality fresh meat through our wide selection of pre-cut case-ready meats that are conveniently packaged to pick up on the go."
