Australian customers will now be able to fuel up and grab groceries at the same time.

Caltex and Woolworths yesterday launched the first Caltex Woolworths Metro in Sydney’s North Ryde, the first of a new type of chain store that combines the best of a petrol station with a supermarket.

The new chain allows commuters that drop in to refuel to also pick up fresh fruit, vegetables and other groceries at the same time.

In the new Caltex Woolworths Metro store, you’ll find hot food like chicken, pies, pastries, barista-made coffee, and fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as products from Woolworths’ Own Brand range.

Other restaurant partners such as Boost Juice will also have a presence.

You’ll also see Woolworths’ familiar self-checkout stations as well as Caltex’s FuelPay app, and you’ll still be able to earn Woolworths Everyday Rewards points.

Woolworths general manager of wholesale, Ian McDonald, said customer demands for fresh food were changing expectations around quality and convenience.

Caltex executive general manager of convenience retail, Jo Taylor added that the new stores would “redefine the convenience experience” for customers.

“We know Australians lead busy lives and are looking for great quality fresh food for a meal on the go or to make preparing a meal at home a little bit easier,” she said.

“Our new store will set the new standard of service, product quality and range that customers will begin to expect when they shop in the petrol and convenience sector.”

Later this month, a second Caltex Woolworths Metro will open in NSW’s Kingsford, and a third store will open in Melbourne early next year.

Just earlier this week, Coles announced a partnership with UK supermarket giant Sainsbury’s that would see the local supermarket sell a new range of beloved British products.
