The transfer window may have closed in England, but it’s still open until September 2 in Spain, Italy, Germany and France. Yahoo Soccer will continue to provide updates on the biggest news and speculation out of Europe.
August 22: PSG turns down king’s ransom for Neymar
Real Madrid seems intent on beating Barcelona to Neymar’s services, and tabled a bid to prove it.
Paris Saint-Germain, however, apparently wasn’t moved.
French media outlet L’Equipe reports that PSG turned down a Real Madrid offer of $111 million plus Gareth Bale, Keylor Navas and James Rodriguez for Neymar, as detailed by Marca.
Read that again. $111 million. Bale. Navas. Rodriguez.
On their day, are any of them as good as Neymar’s best? Probably not, but Neymar hasn’t been at his best in awhile, either. Not to mention Bale and Navas were critical components of Real Madrid’s four Champions League titles the past six season. And James could still be one of the world’s best attackers, he’s just excess goods at Real Madrid.
This is similar to a bid reportedly tabled by Barcelona earlier this summer, which was $112 million plus two players. PSG also rejected that.
Which suggests the French giants might not be all that interested in selling Neymar after all. While injury-prone and a lightning rod off the pitch, there’s a reason Neymar was the subject of PSG’s world-record bid two summers ago, and he’s still just 27 years old.
There are still 11 days before the transfer window closes, too, so the possibility exists that PSG is just driving up the costs in the Barca-Real Madrid bidding war.
If reports are true, both sides need to come back with better offers.
