Wimbledon already considering postponing or canceling event due to coronavirus

Though it’s not scheduled to take place until late June, Wimbledon is in danger of being postponed or canceled. The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club released a statement Wednesday saying it is evaluating both options as a result of the coronavirus.

The AELTC is the venue used to host Wimbledon every year. The event was slated to begin June 29 and run through mid-July.

While canceling the event wouldn’t be a major surprise considering every other sporting event has been put on hold, it’s Wimbledon’s start date that stands out the most. Major League Baseball, for example, only postponed games for eight weeks initially, giving hope that the sport could return to action soon.

The reality of the coronavirus has made that unlikely, and could result in MLB pushing back its projected start dates even farther. If Wimbledon is already considering canceling an event that takes place in July, other sporting events around that time could also be on notice.
