Yahoo Finance What REALLY happened to the mysterious desert monolith
A photographer claims he knows what happened to a monolith which has aroused all sorts of unusual theories after it appeared in a US desert.
A 3.7-metre tall monolith was recently discovered in the US state of Utah but has since disappeared.
It’s not known exactly what happened to the structure.
But photographer Ross Bernards claims he knows what happened.
Bernards wrote on his Instagram he went to visit the monolith on Friday and drove to its location with three of his friends passing a “sea of cars” on the way in.
They arrived about 7pm (local time).
Bernards said they walked past one group of people as they made their way to the monolith and there was another when they got there who then departed soon after.
His group were alone for the following hour and 40 minutes.
As nightfall came and it got to about 8.40pm, Mr Bernards noticed another group arriving.
“Four guys rounded the corner and two of them walked forward,” he wrote.
“They gave a couple of pushes on the monolith and one of them said ‘You better have got your pictures’.”
He claims the man gave the structure a push and another man told him: “This is why you don’t leave trash in the desert.”
Crowds looking for Utah monolith
It took a number of the men to push the monolith over and it landed with a “loud bang”.
“They quickly broke it apart and as they were carrying it to the wheelbarrow that they had brought one of them looked back at us all and said ‘Leave no trace’,” he wrote.
Mr Bernards wrote he and his friends didn’t try to stop the men because they were “right to take it out”.
“We stayed the night and the next day hiked to a hilltop overlooking the area where we saw at least 70 different cars (and a plane) in and out,” he wrote.
“Cars parking everywhere in the delicate desert landscape. Nobody following a path or each other. We could literally see people trying to approach it from every direction to try and reach it, permanently altering the untouched landscape. Mother Nature is an artist, it’s best to leave the art in the wild to her.”

Adding to the mystery, it doesn’t sound like the party which removed the monolith were government officials.
The Bureau of Land Management tweeted on Monday (local time) it was taken away by an “unknown party or parties”.
A second monolith also recently appeared in a Romanian hillside.
No one knows how it got there either.
