We're Hopeful That LiveTiles (ASX:LVT) Will Use Its Cash Wisely

Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although software-as-a-service business Salesforce.com lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. So, the natural question for LiveTiles (ASX:LVT) shareholders is whether they should be concerned by its rate of cash burn. In this article, we define cash burn as its annual (negative) free cash flow, which is the amount of money a company spends each year to fund its growth. When Might LiveTiles Run Out Of Money?

A cash runway is defined as the length of time it would take a company to run out of money if it kept spending at its current rate of cash burn. When LiveTiles last reported its balance sheet in December 2019, it had zero debt and cash worth AU$47m. Looking at the last year, the company burnt through AU$26m. Therefore, from December 2019 it had roughly 21 months of cash runway. That's not too bad, but it's fair to say the end of the cash runway is in sight, unless cash burn reduces drastically. How Well Is LiveTiles Growing?

On balance, we think it's mildly positive that LiveTiles trimmed its cash burn by 15% over the last twelve months. But it was the operating revenue growth of 221% that really shone. It seems to be growing nicely. While the past is always worth studying, it is the future that matters most of all. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company.

How Easily Can LiveTiles Raise Cash?

Even though it seems like LiveTiles is developing its business nicely, we still like to consider how easily it could raise more money to accelerate growth. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Commonly, a business will sell new shares in itself to raise cash to drive growth. By looking at a company's cash burn relative to its market capitalisation, we gain insight on how much shareholders would be diluted if the company needed to raise enough cash to cover another year's cash burn.

LiveTiles has a market capitalisation of AU$196m and burnt through AU$26m last year, which is 14% of the company's market value. As a result, we'd venture that the company could raise more cash for growth without much trouble, albeit at the cost of some dilution.
