The coronavirus shutdown has seen millions of Australians lose their jobs or cop a massive pay cut, leaving some families struggling.

But with so many forced to stay home, paying for a decent internet connection has become essential for education and work.

Telecommunications company Vodafone this week offered a solution to those in financial strife – free internet.

Similar to IPSTAR Broadband's free offering earlier this month, Vodafone is providing low-income families with school-age children connection to an NBN unlimited data plan for $0 a month.

The free period on the Essential NBN BYO plan will last until the end of September, so eligible families will be able to enjoy it for almost five months until they get back on their feet.

Am I eligible for the free NBN plan?

You do need your own modem to connect to Vodafone's free plan. Otherwise, eligible families need to show they:

  • Are receiving the Jobseeker or Family Tax Benefit Part A or B

  • Have at least one school-age child living in the home

  • Not had the NBN connected with any provider since March 1, 2020
