Victorians looking to get out of town over the Christmas holiday period can save $200 as the state government launches its travel voucher scheme.

The first 40,000 $200 vouchers will be available from Friday 10am, but Victorians have been warned they will need to act fast to snap one up

"I would expect demand to potentially outstrip supply, that’s been the experience in other parts of the country,” Minister for Tourism Martin Pakula said.

The vouchers are redeemable for travel from 12 December to 22 January for travel to regional Victoria in a bid to boost struggling regional economies.

“This year more than ever, Victorians deserve a holiday – these vouchers will make that cheaper and easier for families to get out and support their state,” he said.

“A bit more money in people’s pockets means they can see more and do more in regional Victoria – helping local businesses and the people and communities they support to bounce back.”

How do I use the voucher?

To apply for the voucher, head to business.vic.gov.au/travelvouchers from 10:00am, Friday 11 December.

The scheme is open to all Victorian residents provided they’re 18 and over and spend at least $400 on tours, accommodation or experiences in the designated areas.

They are also limited to one per household and travellers need to spend at least two nights in paid accommodation to access the scheme.

Successful applicants redeem the vouchers after they have travelled.

"If they’ve already booked travel, they can apply for a voucher, provided the travel is in that time. But we’re not handing out $200 up front, there needs to be some appropriate rigour in this,” he said.

The vouchers will be issued on a first come, first served basis, and successful applicants will receive confirmation within 24 hours.

The next 40,000 vouchers will be available on 20 January for travel between 27 January and 1 April. The third tranche will be available on 30 March for travel between 6 April and 31 May.
