UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against the Football Association over a "lack of order or discipline" by England supporters at the Euro 2020 Final.

The move follows an investigation by UEFA's Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector around the events inside and around Wembley Stadium for the final against Italy which saw thousands of ticketless supporters storm the gates at the national stadium.

The FA were also charged for supporters throwing objects inside the stadium and for disturbance after fans booed during the Italian national anthem.

Should UEFA decide on a harsh punishment following the proceedings, England could be forced to play behind closed doors following the behaviour of the supporters.

A UEFA statement on Tuesday read: "Following an investigation conducted by a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector into the events involving supporters which occurred inside and around the stadium during the UEFA EURO 2020 final match between the national teams of Italy and England played on 11 July at Wembley Stadium, London, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the English Football Association for a potential violation of Article 16(2)(h) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations for a lack of order or discipline by its supporters."

The FA, who were fined by UEFA following England’s semi-final against Denmark, have confirmed they will conduct a full review into the circumstances around Sunday’s final, while chief executive Mark Bullingham branded those who had broken in without tickets “drunken yobs”.

Bullingham told the BBC last month: “There were a large number of drunken yobs trying to force their way in, we run a stadium not a fortress.

“I have to apologise to any fans whose experience was affected and any of the team who had to cope with this.”
