Yahoo Finance UEFA pushes back Euro to 2021, resolves to end club season by June 30
UEFA has officially delayed Euro 2020 until summer 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to an official release.
European soccer’s governing body also agreed, in coordination with the major leagues and clubs, to finish the season by no later than June 30. That could mean, among other things, more midweek games and revamps to the qualifying rounds of next season’s Champions League campaign, according to the agreement.
The governing body of European soccer held a videoconference with all 55 member nations on Tuesday morning.
Euro 2020 was the last major competition in world soccer this year to be affected by the coronavirus, after the Premier League and every other high-profile club competition across the planet suspended or postponed its play in response to the disease.
The event was scheduled to be played from June 12 to July 12 in 12 different countries to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first European Championship. Portugal is the reigning champion, having beaten France in the 2016 final.
The 2020 Champions League final had been scheduled for May 30 in Istanbul. UEFA added it will monitor the coronavirus outbreak on a daily basis, and further changes could be coming.
