A tradie has revealed how much his "stressful" job pays and there's "plenty" of work available. There are many trades that can see you earning six figures, but some require long hours and lots of elbow grease.

A bloke was stopped on the streets of Brisbane and said he earns between $120,000 to $200,000 per year as a fire technician. The salary depends on how hard he works but he explained that even apprentices are well remunerated in this field.

"I think my apprentice will make $80k this year," he told GetAhead.

Fire technicians are responsible for installing, testing and maintaining fire protection equipment in buildings.

They make sure extinguishers, hoses, reels, hydrants, fire blankets, exit lighting, and fire and smoke doors are all up to date and ready for action in the event of a blaze.

The apprenticeship takes four years, but once you're certified you're kept fairly busy as there are a lot of buildings that need certification.

The tradie said he's been blessed to work in many different environments and "cool" spots but admitted it can be stressful.

"If something goes offline, you can't go home, that's the only thing, you can't just drop your tools and leave at the end of the day," he told jobs app GetAhead.

"That's why you get paid the money."

He said any electrician can get into the trade and they'll get rewarded for their hard work.

"There's heaps of jobs, if you're a sparkie and you wanna get into it, call em, there's plenty of jobs going where I work," he added.

Aussies were stunned that a trade like this could bring in such a big wage, but some warned it wasn't a walk in the park.

"I'm a sparky doing FIFO, and I don't get that much," said one tradie.

"Sounds about right, you guys have to remember he's not doing 9-5. He's travelling away doing 10-24 hour days. Night work plus on-call services," wrote another.

"Sprinkler fire installer $380 a head. 6,000 heads at the site we're doing ATM," said a fellow fire tech.

According to the federal government, there are around 4,100 fire technicians employed across Australia at the moment.

It's a "physically demanding" job that requires a lot of driving from site to site.

To get a Certificate III in fire protection inspection and testing from the Fire Industry Academy, you have to have a minimum of 12 months of experience in the routine servicing of fire protection equipment or systems, or have experience and skills in a plumbing, electrical or fire-related job role.

The course is delivered in the workplace with support from industry experts.
