Tom Brady tops Patrick Mahomes — again — for most expensive football card ever sold

·1-min read

The trading card boom keeps booming.

An autographed Tom Brady rookie card sold for $1.32 million Thursday, shattering the previous record for the highest known price ever fetched for a football card. And just like last month's Super Bowl, Brady got the best of Patrick Mahomes.

A signed Mahomes rookie sold at auction last month for $861,000, briefly holding the record that Brady's card broke Thursday by $459,000.

Trading card broker PWCC Marketplace announced Thursday's sale to a collector and Brady fan named James Park.

"I lived in Boston for 10 years and so am a huge fan of Brady," Park told PWCC. "I've also had a love of collecting cards since I was a kid. Given Brady's uncontested status as GOAT in football, this card is an important piece of sports history and of any collection."

Skyrocketing card prices

The card is a 2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket graded eight out of 10, considered near mint condition. It's one of 100 produced. Another version of the same Brady card rated as PSA Gem Mint 10 previously sold on eBay for $555,988. And that was just on January 31.

That higher-graded Brady rookie held the sales record until the Mahomes card topped it last month. So it's safe to say Thursday's record won't last long — that is unless the market finally cools off.
