But the first match of the defence of their title is on the red button on BBC coverage at the moment - the main channel still has skateboarding, I assume that's because BBC will switch to the pool in next 30 minutes or so - let's hope so (no offence to all you skateboarders, it's just that Britain have a few medal hopes...)
Anyway, nine million watched the Rio final against the Netherlands, which finished 3-3 after normal time and went to penalties.
With seven minutes of the first quarter GB are 0-0 against the Germans.

Jagger Eaton is currently in the lead after a great run in heat one. His total score of 35.07 should see him into the top eight - only the top eight scores make the final and not heat winners etc.

The Briton goes in the women’s 400m individual medley final at 3.12am. She finished second in her heat and is a definite medal hope.
She finished ahead of race favourites Katinka Hosszu and Mireia Belmonte on her way to producing a season's best time of 4:35.28. American Emma Weyant starts as the favourite but Willmott has experience on her side - this is her third Olympics, and this is her second appearance in an Olympic final.

I have been brushing up on my surfer speak (or maybe not, as that pathetic, slightly immature attempt at it proves...) as surfing has made it's debut at the Games.
There was worry that conditions would postpone the appearance of (*checks surfer dictionary) wipeouts, leggies, kooks and cutbacks at the Olympics. BUT the waves are out in force at the Tsurigasaki Surfing Beach (40 miles east of Tokyo) and so are the best surfers in the world.
So far home hope Kanoa Igarashi and Italo Ferreira of Brazil have won the first two heats and, as you'd expect with any surfer, they look quite cool...

With crowds lining the streets for the road race yesterday, the supposedly spectator-free Tokyo Games has been consistently inconsistent in its Covid-19 protocols. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has warned it will take action over "blatant" breaches from mask-free Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Tajikistan athletes at the opening ceremony.
Under the "playbooks" in force at the delayed Olympic Games here, athletes are told to wear masks "at all times" and "in all locations" of the venues, "with the exception of training, competing, eating, drinking or during interviews".
Christophe Dubi, the IOC's executive director for the Games, promised action would be taken over severe rule breaches. Dubi, speaking during an IOC and Tokyo 2020 press briefing here, said Chefs de Mission of teams competing at Tokyo 2020 had been reminded about wearing masks.

The Briton you really don't want to mess with will defend her -57kg Olympic title today. Anyone with a nickname 'The 'Headhunter' is clearly quite good (no, she's not a badly behaved Chelsea fan...) and she needs one more gold to become the most decorated taekwondo athlete of all time at the Games.
Smoking at the age of 10 is NEVER a good idea (smoking at any age isn't great, to be fair...) but it worked out for Jones who, having been caught with a fag in her mouth, was taken to a taekwondo gym by her Grandad in a bid to persuade her to find a more healthy pursuit.
Not only does Jones have two Olympic golds, but she also has the best Twitter bio: 'I kick people in the head for a living'.
The 28-year-old gets her title tilt under way at 3.52am...

So day one (well at least the first day after the opening ceremony) is done and as if the pictures of empty stands and stadia didn’t make this obvious enough - this doesn’t seem like a normal Olympics.
Don’t take my word for it, however. Adam Peaty, who will be in the pool for the men’s 100m breaststroke semi-final before 4am, said this after his heats on Saturday: “it doesn’t feel like an Olympics”.
The defending champion and Team GB’s biggest hope for a gold was in usually dominant form as he qualified fastest - in 57.56secs - for the semi-final in a time that was his eighth fastest overhand still quicker than anyone else in history. That’s the mark of a man who is arguably more dominant in the pool than Usain Bolt was on the track.
“It’s a fast pool (but really weird with no crowd - really weird,” he said after his win on Saturday.
“It doesn’t feel like an Olympics, it’s not the same. But obviously when you go back to the village, that’s when it does. So it’s about controlling all of those emotions and performing when it matters. There are the psychological things we need to adapt to. I had no idea how it was going to feel out there, I am glad the cobwebs are gone.”
There is little doubt Peaty will make it to the final - the big question will be what time will he post and whether that indicates he could challenge his world record of 56.88secs come the final.
Also taking place in these wee small hours are the British women’s hockey team taking on Germany at 1.30am and surfing will hopefully make its debut as well. I say hopefully as it very much depends on conditions - let’s hope for some waves.
