People across the world will celebrate with friends and family today as they usher in the Lunar New Year on February 1.

According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2022 is the Year of the Tiger, more specifically the Year of the Water Tiger, which symbolises a prosperous year all round.

The holiday, which is celebrated by more than 1 billion people around the world, brings with it a sense of optimism and hope as we enter the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is the Lunar New Year?

The Lunar New Year is also commonly referred to as the Chinese New Year or Spring Festival and is celebrated at the rise of the second moon after the winter solstice.

Last year was the Year of the Ox, known for being hardworking and altruistic.

This year, the tiger brings with it qualities of strength and bravery and a whole lot of disruption, which could be good for business.

If the Year of the Ox was one of endurance, which worked well for wealth creation according to experts, the Year of the Tiger is expected to be one of growth, which means great success could be in store for your career and earnings.

What the Year of the Tiger signifies

According to Chinese folklore, the tiger and 11 other animals participated in The Heavenly Gate Race, which determined how the 12 zodiacs were chosen.

The tiger arrived third, after the rat and the ox, despite its speed and confidence.

But the tiger ran an independent race, unlike the other animals, denoting the self-reliant nature of the creature.

It is believed tiger personalities prefer to work individually, but with speed and confidence.

As the tiger is associated with Yang, which represents masculine and active energies according to Chinese astrology, rapid changes and sudden disruptions are in store.

This will be a year full of productivity and progress.

The Chinese god of wealth, Tsai Shen Yeh, is often seen sitting on a tiger in Asian art, alluding to the fact that the tiger itself is associated with wealth.

The tiger is also believed to ward off any harm or obstacles in the path to success.

The tiger is a go-getter and, while they are headstrong, they are also loyal to family and dear ones, so it would bode well for other signs to follow the tiger's lead and grow along or miss out.

On the flip side, it denotes excess activity and restlessness coupled with a brash and controlling nature.

Those born under this zodiac may often find themselves isolated at work or in the community due to their domineering nature.

Some famous people born in the year of the tiger include Queen Elizabeth II, Marilyn Monroe, Steve Irwin, Lady Gaga, Leonardo DiCaprio, Richard Branson, Steve Wozniak, Hugh Hefner and Rafael Nadal to name a few.

What the tiger means for your career

According to the South China Morning Post, the Year of the Tiger is said to be one of many changes.

Unlike the past years of the Rat and Ox, which were plagued by severe struggles, this year brings many opportunities, which can be used to further your business, career and other personal areas of growth.

However, the tiger could encounter difficult times due to conflict in their astrological charts.

This does not take away from the opportunities they can capitalise on. It is important to prioritise and work hard.

A little prudence in paperwork and focus on high-priority projects could earn workers a promotion according to fortune-tellers.

Students will have the chance to improve their learning and analytical skills.

This year could be tough for three other signs along with the tiger. The monkey, dragon and the snake could expect similar challenges in their professional lives.

Those born under the rabbit, ox, and rooster signs may experience an exceptionally lucky year, money-wise, according to experts.

What to do with your money

Tigers will experience relatively stable financial luck this year according to China Highlights.

However, they are advised to manage their money prudently and avoid investing blindly in large projects, which could cause huge losses.

They are also advised to maintain reserve funds for contingencies.
