A teenager with strict parents decided to go to college on the other side of the country. His parents are furious.
He shared why he made the choice on Reddit’s “Am I the A******” forum. The 17-year-old is sick of all of his parent’s rules. He wasn’t even allowed to freely use a phone he bought with his own money and has a curfew of 9:30 p.m. His solution was to go to college far away and foot the bill himself.

“My parents are strict,” he explained. “Their rules: No dating, unless in a group setting, no swearing, no girl allowed over or going to her house, no phone in the bedroom, no phone at night, no passwords, social media has to be checked by a parent, keep location on life360, curfew 9:30 p.m. [and] no whispering. If I want to watch something, they have to review it first to see if it has a lot of ‘inappropriate content’, etc. I got a job and bought my own phone. I figured if I showed responsibility by getting my own phone and paying the bill monthly, my parents would not treat me so childishly.
They got mad at me and said the same rules they had about the phone they bought me [would] apply to this one.”

The teenager decided to part ways as soon as he turned 18.
“I live in New York, but I applied to several colleges in Texas, Louisiana and California because I have family in those states,” he wrote. “I paid for all of my admission fees. I have aid from FAFSA. I wasn’t gonna tell my parents until August got closer, but they found out recently. They’re angry. My dad doesn’t want to let me go. I told him I’ll be 18, so it’s not his choice. My parents called me a selfish brat. They walked away from me while I was still trying to defend myself. We haven’t had another conversation about it since. It’s basically just silent treatment.”
Reddit users thought he was acting responsibly.
“They aren’t mad you’re leaving. They are mad you will no longer be controlled by them,” one person said.
“Run as far and as fast as you can from them,” another wrote.
“You don’t need toxic people like this in your life,” a user commented.
