A teenager has been charged with the murders of two 16-year-old boys in Essex.

Frankie Watson, 19, is due to appear at Southend Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning where he was also facing charges of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Charlie Preston and friend Frankie Gater were stabbed to death during what police described as a targeted ambush in Brentwood on Sunday morning.

Two men - a 20-year-old from Grays and a 21-year-old from South Ockendon - who were arrested on suspicion of murder have been released on bail to November 19, and a 40-year-old male from Brentwood has been released under investigation.

Police were called to Regency Court about 1.30am on Sunday. A third person was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Charlie’s mum Kirsti, 37, who has two other children, wept when she visited the scene on Monday.

She reportedly told a friend: “I am broken.

“I don’t know how I’m going to be able to deal with this. I have lost my firstborn child.”

Essex Police seized more than 200 hours of CCTV footage as part of the investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Truss, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our investigation is progressing well and we are building a picture of the circumstances which led up to the boys’ death.”

He stressed that police believe it was an isolated incident and “there isn’t a risk to the wider public”.
