Whether you live in a small space or you just don’t want a big bulky cardio machine sitting in your living room, a compact treadmill is a good option for getting in more steps. You can be like some of the girlies on TikTok and place your tread under a standing desk to walk while you work, or use it while you listen to a true crime podcast. Either way, movement is movement, no matter how or when you do it.

One of Amazon’s best-selling compact treadmills is the WalkingPad. The treadmill actually folds up, so you can slide it under your bed or your sofa when you’re not using it. It’s only 62 pounds too, which is light enough that you can probably pull it out on your own but just heavy enough that you might sweat a little while doing so.

Keep in mind, this is really meant for walking — not jogging or running. It only goes up to about 4 mph, and it doesn’t have handlebars or a dash to hold onto. The speed is also determined by a smart sensor that’s automatically controlled by your foot position: Move forward on the belt to accelerate, stay in the middle to keep a consistent pace and move to the back of the tread to decelerate.

If you’re not sure about the smart sensor part, you can manually control the speed with an included remote control, too. The remote also displays your time on the treadmill, mileage and calories roughly burned.

Walking is a great workout for your physical and mental health. While there are the obvious benefits of exercise, according to a study published in Health Promotion Perspectives in 2018, young people who briskly walked for about 10 minutes per day found that their mood improved. And according to an article published by Harvard Health, walking for just 20 minutes a day, five days a week, could boost your immune system.

When it’s too cold to go outside, or you just can’t step away from your desk, a foldable treadmill like the WalkingPad is a good option for getting your stride on.
