Southeastern train services severely disrupted amid ongoing urgent repairs

Commuters have been warned of severe disruption in London and the South East amid ongoing repairs to a section of track in the New Cross area.

Rail passengers planning on travelling on Southeastern trains are being urged to make alternative travel plans as urgent repairs caused delays and cancellations to services in and out of Charing Cross.

Network Rail tweeted on Tuesday morning that a set of points, which help trains switch tracks, had cracked in the New Cross area.

“We have engineers on site and they will be able to fix most of the problem this afternoon, but will need to go back in overnight to complete the job, when trains aren’t running and we cause the least disruption,” Network Rail said.

In an update on their website, Southeastern said that trains between Dartford and London Charing Cross via Bexleyheath will be cancelled. Services running between Hastings and Charing Cross will be diverted to and from Cannon Street.

Meanwhile, services in and out of Euston have been delayed after a person was hit by a train at Headstone Lane station in Harrow. Emergency services were called to the station to deal with the incident.

Avanti West Coast said that services would be cancelled or delayed throughout Tuesday morning.

The delays to Southeastern services comes just days after the government announced a takeover of the franchise after it failed to declare more than £25 million of taxpayer funding.

The switch, announced last month, involves the Department for Transport (DfT) running trains under the Operator of Last Resort (OLR).

Southeastern’s network is one of the busiest networks in Britain, stretching across south-east England including London, Kent, East Sussex and the High Speed 1 line.
