Slice and dice tricky fruits and vegetables the right way with these hacks

Sometimes the most challenging part about cooking is the prep required. And if your knife skills aren’t exactly restaurant level, it can be difficult to know how to cut certain foods. Fortunately, there are many hacks on TikTok that demonstrate the right way to slice and dice. Here are five knife hacks that will make chopping those challenging fruits and veggies a breeze.

1. How to easily cut a mango

Mangoes are an oblong-shaped mystery when it comes to slicing them. Luckily, TikToker Nicole Renard (@nicole_thenomad) has cracked the code with her mango-cutting hack. A mango’s pit runs straight down the middle, so Renard cuts adjacent to the core for a clean slice. Then taking a knife, she scores the mango by cutting diagonal lines both ways, forming a zig-zag pattern. Grab a spoon or fork, and enjoy!

2. How to easily cut a pomegranate

Learn how to cut a pomegranate in under two minutes with this hack from TikToker Jaime Milne (@everything_delish). Cut around the top of the pomegranate and then remove that piece. Then cut each section vertically with a knife. Remove any white pulp, then gently separate and open the pomegranate. Take out the seeds, and place them in a bowl. Once all the seeds are removed, fill the bowl with water, letting the remaining pulp float toward the surface. Remove the pulp and enjoy!

3. The right way to slice tomatoes

No more sloppy tomato slices, thanks to this hack from TikToker Aaron Alterman (@aaronalterman). Instead of cutting the tomato from its top where the stem was, turn it on the side and slice. This way, your sandwiches will stay juicy, and your cutting board will be free of tomato pulp and seeds.

4. How to dice a pepper

This hack from TikToker Eugene Wong (@the_eugefood) makes dicing peppers look fun. After cutting off the top and bottom of a pepper, Wong makes one vertical incision. He then lays the pepper on its side and, keeping the knife tucked under the core, rolls it out like a piece of taffy. Wong then cuts the pepper in half after removing its center. He places the halves evenly on top of each other and cuts the pepper into strips with the red skin facing up. Wong turns the pepper strips again for a final dice.

5. The right way to cut onions

TikToker Sonny Hurrell (@thatdudecancook) shared a waste-saving hack for cutting onions in half. Hurrell’s method involves cutting the onion straight through the middle from top to bottom, after which he makes one tiny cut to remove the shriveled bottom of the onion. The finished product is a perfect onion slice with little waste left over.
