Shareholders in Koenig & Bauer (ETR:SKB) are in the red if they invested five years ago

While it may not be enough for some shareholders, we think it is good to see the Koenig & Bauer AG (ETR:SKB) share price up 25% in a single quarter. But that is little comfort to those holding over the last half decade, sitting on a big loss. In fact, the share price has declined rather badly, down some 65% in that time. So we're not so sure if the recent bounce should be celebrated. We'd err towards caution given the long term under-performance.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Koenig & Bauer became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. Other metrics may better explain the share price move.

In contrast to the share price, revenue has actually increased by 0.04% a year in the five year period. So it seems one might have to take closer look at the fundamentals to understand why the share price languishes. After all, there may be an opportunity.

It is of course excellent to see how Koenig & Bauer has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. Take a more thorough look at Koenig & Bauer's financial health with this free report on its balance sheet.

A Different Perspective

Koenig & Bauer shareholders are down 30% for the year, but the market itself is up 4.6%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 10% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Koenig & Bauer .
