Shamrock Shakes are back — but here’s why it’s not worth the effort to get one

McDonald’s Shamrock Shakes are back for a limited time until St. Patrick’s Day.

The iconic shake is celebrating its 51st anniversary this year, with the additional return of the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry. Shamrock Shakes were originally invented by a McDonald’s owner in Connecticut and have become synonymous with spring thanks to their light-green coloring.

I have never had a Shamrock Shake before in my life, but because I am from Connecticut and it was the 51st anniversary, I thought I would bite the bullet and see what all the fuss was about.

First of all, I appreciate McDonald’s optimism by releasing a “spring-themed” milkshake in mid-February, a time of year where I feel like I’ve been living underground for 45 years.

I also had no idea what this was supposed to taste like. I guessed mint (only because of the color), but considering mint chocolate chip ice cream is so polarizing on the internet, I thought there was no way that something so popular could taste minty.

Au contraire, Shamrock Shakes are very minty. I’ll say it: They are too minty. They taste like I brushed my teeth and then immediately drank a vanilla milkshake.

As much as I love a limited-edition menu item, this did not please my tastebuds and I am once again left on the outside looking in.
