Sex Education's Connor Swindells lands first movie role since show ended

Sex Education star Connor Swindells has landed his first movie role since the series ended.

The actor, best known for playing Adam in the hit Netflix coming-of-age series, will appear in the upcoming historical drama William Tell.

The film, based on the 1804 play of the same name by German writer Friedrich Schiller, is led by Bad Sisters and Dracula star Claes Bang, who plays the crossbow wielding protagonist Tell.

In addition to Bang and Swindells, the supportive cast includes The Little Mermaid's Jonah Hauer-King, Trying star Rafe Spall, Willow actress Ellie Bamber and Golshifteh Farahani of Extraction franchise fame.

Oscar winner Ben Kingsley and Golden Globe nominee Jonathan Pryce (aka Prince Philip in The Crown season 6) also appear in the film.

William Tell has been reimagined for the screen by BAFTA award-winning director Nick Hemm, who directed and additionally wrote the film's screenplay. "As a filmmaker I couldn’t ask for a more exceptional cast to bring this story to life," he said.

First look images show Bang in character as William Tell on the battlefield, with a second showing him embrace actress Golshifteh Farahani, whose role, like Swindell's, remains unknown.

William Tell is set in 14th century Switzerland and follows the final days of the Roman Empire.

The film's protagonist is a leading figure in the fight for Swiss independence, who takes action against the Austrian King and warlords after seeing the empire's collapse as an opportunity to expand their land.

"Tell’s story has a relevance and immediacy that is strikingly contemporary," says Hamm in a press statement, who teases an iconic moment from the tale in the upcoming film.

"The Apple Scene in particular has gripped the world’s imagination for hundreds of years and yet has never been dramatised in modern cinema," he said.

The scene in question is a famous sequence from Schiller's play, where the Austrian king challenges Tell to shoot an apple off the head of his son with his bow and arrow.

William Tell currently has no release date, but bosses have confirmed the movie is currently wrapping up its last week of principal photography in Italy.

This suggests movie-goers won't have to wait too long to see Swindells and Bang on screen in the action-packed drama.

Sex Education seasons 1-4 are available to watch on Netflix.
