Seahawks extend GM John Schneider through 2027, and Russell Wilson approves

The Seattle Seahawks announced on Tuesday that they have signed general manger John Schneider to a contract extension through the 2027 NFL draft.

Schneider has worked as the Seahawks general manager since 2010. He added the title of executive vice president in 2013. The Seahawks have played in two Super Bowls during Schneider’s tenure, winning one against the Denver Broncos after the 2013 season.

Schneider’s legacy in Seattle

He oversaw the selection of quarterback Russell Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft and helped build the “Legion of Boom” defense that anchored those Super Bowl runs, finding Pro Bowl defenders like Kam Chancellor and Richard Sherman in the fifth round of the draft. He also oversaw the trade for running back Marshawn Lynch from the Buffalo Bills in 2010.

Some recent selections like taking running back Rashaad Penny in the first round of the 2018 draft when Seattle already had Chris Carson have drawn scrutiny.

Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll were hired at the same time in 2010 and have combined to make nine playoff appearances, including five NFC West championships. Wilson expressed his approval of Schneider’s extension shortly after it was announced.

The news quells reports that Schneider could be headed elsewhere this offseason. The Detroit Lions reportedly eyed him as the top target to fill their general manager opening.
