Yahoo Finance Report: Jason Witten to retire from NFL again, will sign one-day contract with Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys great Jason Witten is calling it a career ... again. Witten will reportedly sign a one-day contract with the Cowboys so he can retire from the NFL, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.
Witten, 38, has spent 17 seasons in the NFL, 16 of which came with the Cowboys. After retiring for the first time in 2018, Witten returned to the Cowboys for the 2019 season. He left the team last offseason, signing with the Las Vegas Raiders.
In his final season, Witten caught 13 passes for 69 yards and 2 touchdowns with the Raiders.
Will Jason Witten considering broadcasting again?
After retiring for the first time, Witten signed on with ESPN to become a broadcaster on “Monday Night Football.” He received mostly negative reviews as a commentator, and admitted that it “sucked going through” that. He says the criticism had nothing to do with Witten returning to the NFL.
It’s unclear whether Witten wants to reprise his role as a broadcaster following his second retirement. ESPN is reportedly happy with its current “Monday Night Football” booth, though will reportedly speak to former Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers about a role as an analyst. It’s possible Witten could get back into broadcasting in that type of role.
Jason Witten waiting for his Hall of Fame call
Assuming he doesn’t return again, Witten’s Hall of Fame clock starts now. Among tight ends, Witten ranks second in catches and yardage at the position, behind Tony Gonzalez. He ranks fifth in touchdowns at the position. On top of that, Witten was named to 11 Pro Bowls, and made the All-Pro team twice.
Because of that, Witten is considered a strong candidate to receive Hall of Fame consideration. Gonzalez was able to get into the Hall of Fame his first year on the ballot. He was the first tight end in NFL history to receive that honor.
