It’s time to check your wallet and your drawers, you could be sitting on a small fortune if you find this coin. An Aussie coin enthusiast has revealed the small detail that makes this $2 coin worth much, much more.

Victorian coin collector Michael McCauley told Aussies to look out for 2012 Red Poppy $2 coins. These coloured coins were made to commemorate Remembrance Day and feature the image of a red poppy surrounded by the words ‘Lest we forget’ and ‘Remembrance Day’ in micro-lettering.

The Royal Mint only made 503,000 of the coins, making them one of the lowest minted coloured circulating $2 coins in Australian history.

“Do not spend these coins,” McCauley explained on TikTok, sharing they were worth between $240 and $500 based on recent selling prices.

McCauley shared there were some even rarer versions of the coin that were more valuable if you managed to get your hands on them.

“If it’s got a ‘C’ mint mark on it … You can see a little C inside that emblem there, it’s $530 to $1,150 if it is a 2012 red poppy,” he said.

According to the Royal Mint, only 40,902 of the ‘C’ Mintmark Remembrance Day $2 coins were produced making them an even rarer find.

The Mint also released a 10th anniversary edition of the 2012 Red Poppy $2 coin in 2022, which are now worth more than their face value. The release sparked a frenzy at the time, with the Mint’s website crashing the morning of their release.

“These [2022] ones are worth up to $350. But the 2012’s I’ve never found one so definitely keep an eye out for it,” McCauley said.

A number of Aussies shared they had come across the rare $2 coins over the years, but some said they unfortunately had ended up accidentally spending them.

“Omg I used to have so many of these fresh out of a roll and I spent them all years ago,” one user said.

“I had 7 of these tucked away, my kids took them unbeknownst to me and spent them at the tuck shop,” another said.
