With the cost-of-living crisis affecting people all over the country, Aussies are looking to the gig economy as a source of secondary income to make ends meet.

While 62,000 Australians have turned to driving Uber to supplement their income, others are delivering food, freelancing or doing odd jobs via platforms such as Upwork and Airtasker.

According to finance guru Queenie Tan, who regularly shares money tips with more than 250,000 followers on social media, another platform offering Aussies an effective way to earn extra cash is Amazon Flex.

Launched in January 2020, Amazon Flex is part of the Amazon Australia network, giving Aussies the opportunity to drive their own vehicles to deliver packages as self-employed contractors.

How to earn an extra $11,000 in one year

In a recent video posted to TikTok, Queenie trialed the platform by spending the day with Mark, a medical student and Amazon Flex delivery driver. She discovered that by completing one four-hour delivery block, drivers can earn $114, or roughly $28.50 per hour.

If drivers completed one four-hour delivery block per week, they'd earn $5,616 in a year. Two four-hour delivery blocks a week would net $11,232 in a year.

Getting started

To become an Amazon Flex delivery partner, you need to download the app, follow the sign-up process, complete a background check, and start accepting delivery blocks. For drivers in NSW, Bluecard safety accreditation training is also required, which will be paid for by Amazon Australia.

Delivery partners choose the delivery blocks that suit them and get paid weekly. Rates for delivery partners start at $114 for a four-hour sedan block and go up to a minimum of $225 for an eight-hour cargo van block, which includes a 30-minute unpaid break.
