Public petition police over hidden 'witness' in CCTV of missing Glee star

CCTV footage of Glee star Naya Rivera’s last moments before she went missing on a Californian lake has prompted a public petition after viewers spotted a potential new witness in the case hidden in the grainy footage.

Police confirmed that the former Glee actress is missing and presumed drowned after renting out a boat with her four-year-old son Josey on Lake Piru in Ventura, California on Wednesday.

Hours after they rented it, Josey was found alone and asleep in the boat and later told authorities that his mother had "jumped into the water but didn't come back up".

On Friday police released CCTV footage taken at the dock that shows Naya and Josey’s last moments before she went missing, after confirming on Thursday that the search had been changed to a recovery mission as they presume the actor dead.

Observers call for investigation into jet ski footage

Now eagle-eyed observers of the footage have launched an online petition in a bid to get Ventura Police to track down and interview the driver of a jet ski spotted driving on the lake as the actress and her son pull out of the dock.

The vehicle can be seen in the background of the grainy footage crossing the lake as Naya and Josey head north, eventually disappearing from view.

The jet ski does not go in the same direction in the available footage but is the only other vehicle seen on the lake in the video.

With over 8,500 signatures, the petition is calling on police to treat the driver as a possible witness, arguing whoever was on the ski was ‘the most likely’ to know what had happened to the star.

The footage shared on YouTube prompted thousands of comments from fans wishing the star well, and dubbing the video ‘hard to watch’.

The footage shows Naya and Josey step out of the car and make their way over to the pier, with Naya carrying a large white bag as Josey walks behind her.

The pair then board a boat which sails out across the lake, shared with the aforementioned ski.

911 call released by local police

Police also released audio of the initial 911 call made when Naya’s four-year-old son, Josey Hollis Dorsey, was found asleep and alone in the boat.

In the recording a woman describes the situation to an operator, misidentifying Josey as a little girl and saying: “The emergency is we have a missing person we found a little girl in one of the boats by herself and her mum’s nowhere to be found.”

The woman goes on to explain her husband was one of the first to find the child, saying that while she didn’t have all the details about the incident she ‘just wanted to call it in’.

Officials say Naya ‘never made it out of the water’

Officials gave an update on the recovery mission for the Glee star on Friday morning revealing they believe the actress “never made it out of the water”.

The revelation comes after the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said after speaking to Josey some more they believe Naya drowned.

“He gave enough information to investigators to conclude that his mother never made it out of the water,” Sergeant Kevin Donoghue told reporters.

“We’re still investigating and trying to find out what happen,” the Sergeant continued. “It’s not uncommon to have boating accidents and people lose their lives. And we have had drownings here.”

He said the department was using “every asset available to locate her” including a team of divers and air operations.
