Is Progyny, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:PGNY) Latest Stock Performance A Reflection Of Its Financial Health?

·3-min read

Progyny (NASDAQ:PGNY) has had a great run on the share market with its stock up by a significant 34% over the last three months. Since the market usually pay for a company’s long-term fundamentals, we decided to study the company’s key performance indicators to see if they could be influencing the market. Particularly, we will be paying attention to Progyny's ROE today.

Return on equity or ROE is an important factor to be considered by a shareholder because it tells them how effectively their capital is being reinvested. In short, ROE shows the profit each dollar generates with respect to its shareholder investments.

How Is ROE Calculated?

The formula for return on equity is:

Return on Equity = Net Profit (from continuing operations) ÷ Shareholders' Equity

So, based on the above formula, the ROE for Progyny is:

31% = US$58m ÷ US$185m (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2021).

The 'return' is the amount earned after tax over the last twelve months. One way to conceptualize this is that for each $1 of shareholders' capital it has, the company made $0.31 in profit.

What Has ROE Got To Do With Earnings Growth?

Thus far, we have learned that ROE measures how efficiently a company is generating its profits. Depending on how much of these profits the company reinvests or "retains", and how effectively it does so, we are then able to assess a company’s earnings growth potential. Assuming all else is equal, companies that have both a higher return on equity and higher profit retention are usually the ones that have a higher growth rate when compared to companies that don't have the same features.

Progyny's Earnings Growth And 31% ROE

To begin with, Progyny has a pretty high ROE which is interesting. Secondly, even when compared to the industry average of 16% the company's ROE is quite impressive. As a result, Progyny's exceptional 114% net income growth seen over the past five years, doesn't come as a surprise.

As a next step, we compared Progyny's net income growth with the industry, and pleasingly, we found that the growth seen by the company is higher than the average industry growth of 13%.

By doing so, they will have an idea if the stock is headed into clear blue waters or if swampy waters await. Is Progyny fairly valued compared to other companies? These 3 valuation measures might help you decide.

Is Progyny Efficiently Re-investing Its Profits?

Summary

On the whole, we feel that Progyny's performance has been quite good. Particularly, we like that the company is reinvesting heavily into its business, and at a high rate of return. Unsurprisingly, this has led to an impressive earnings growth. That being so, a study of the latest analyst forecasts show that the company is expected to see a slowdown in its future earnings growth.
