Packer launches indigenous employment program

Crown Casino chief James Packer formally launched his gaming company's reconciliation action plan on Monday and pledged to create more than 2000 jobs for indigenous Australians by 2021.

Crown signed up to the Australian Employment Covenant – Andrew Forrest’s indigenous employment initiative – around five years ago and has long been vocal in its desire to create job opportunities for indigenous Australians.

Packer’s gaming empire currently employs around 100 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders out of a total of 14,400 staff. Obviously that number will need to rise significantly if Crown is to reach its target of 2000 fully employed indigenous staff by 2021.

Mr Packer said on Monday that ''with each new employee we make a difference, in their life, their family's lives, in the community and our organisation,'' reports BusinessDay.

''And yes, while we have only really begun our journey, we have learnt a great deal and made progress.''
