How to make your own natural, 3-ingredient hair lightener for the summer

Do you want that light, summery hair color without going to the salon?

In The Know’s Phoebe Zaslav is all about finding the best DIY hacks that will save you a couple of bucks — especially ones that are a natural alternative to other products and procedures. In addition to hacks for how to create an all-natural fake tan and effortless mermaid hair waves, Phoebe’s also got a formula for lightening your hair while keeping it moisturized. And it only requires three ingredients.

“We all know the lemon trick that lightens your hair by spraying your hair with juice and baking in the sun, but oftentimes this can leave your hair feeling really dry and damaged,” Phoebe said. “This hack is an effective and hair hydrating twist on the old lemon trick.”

What you’ll need:

  • 3 lemons

  • 1/4 cup of hair conditioner

  • 1 cup of water

“You’re still going to need lemons, but we are also going to add a little conditioner to the mixture to lock in moisture and protect our locks,” she explained.

Combine the ingredients into a spray bottle and give it a good shake. Voila!

“Make sure to wet your hair and I’m just going to spray all over,” Phoebe added. “Roots, ends, all over.”

Sit in the sun — remember to wear sunscreen! — and let the formula work its magic.

“This is something you can do all summer long to keep your hair brighter and lighter,” Phoebe said. “We love a hot girl summer.”
